We live in a visual world, our lives are dominated by images on TV, in newspapers, magazines, cinema and the web. This is a window into my world of photography.
Someone asked me the other day what makes a good picture? In truth I don't know; beauty is in the eye of the beholder to use that old fashioned expression. Whether what you will see on this web site constitute 'good' images is purely a view formed by your opinion and perception.
I once heard a talk from a lecturer in fine art who was also a photographer, regretfully his name escapes me. But he said, always count the objects in your photo. How many are important and how many aren't? For the ones that aren't can you reframe to remove? What should be there and what shouldn't? What are you photographing? Decide! Of course the simplest answer could have been - use the right light or perhaps use the light right?.
As a largely non-professional photographer for over 40 years I have this constant urge to capture aspects of life that surrounds me on my travles and create new pictures. Sometimes these are straight photo's, sometimes heavily manipulated.
I make no excuse, I am not a purist who insists that images must not be manipulated. But don't we crop, tweak the contrast a little, change our viewpoint, use a different lens? Surely these are instances where the photographer, purist or otherwise manipulates or 'tweaks' the image, and manipulates his (or her) reality whether consciously or sub-consciously.
Come in and have a look at my images and my web site.
